The Growing Family

Neither of our boys have uneventful births, however Brooks was much riskier than his older brothers. When we found out we were expecting Baby #2, my thoughts were filled with picking out names for both genders (we were waiting to find out the gender until birth) and how I could care for a baby in as minimal a way possible since we were (are) still living in the in laws house. For the first 5 months of the pregnancy I didn’t worry about my health or the baby’s aside from if I was going to schedule a c-section or trying to eat better to hopefully avoid preeclampsia with this baby. It wasn’t until the 3rd trimester that COVID-19 was considered to be a concern for pregnant women and babies. From there it escalated to the social distancing to try and flatten the curve, and the changes in my clinic and hospital. My last month of check-ups were not with my usual doctor as he was working exclusively in the hospital, but thankfully my body did behave and I never had blood pressure issues. We scheduled the c-section for Friday, April 3rd. Nick and I worked from home the 3 weeks leading up to the delivery keeping Axel home with us for two of those weeks to also limit his exposure.

My doctor (Dr. Derek Peters) thankfully stayed on from his overnight shift to deliver. When we arrived at the hospital that morning it was just Nick and I as I was only allowed one support person, and we were not allowed any other visitors. We were greeted by two nurses at the front desk, one for phone calls, and the other there to screen and mask everyone who entered. This delivery was different as it was actually scheduled surgery (which I’d never experienced before) so up to pre-op we went. The nurses were all wonderful as usual, however all masked as well.

Brooks Lee Langer made his arrival on Friday, April 3rd at 7:28am, weighing 9lb 1oz (much larger than his brother) and 20.5 in long. We had decided on his name in the operating room as they were preparing to introduce us to our new babe (girl would have been Hadley Jane). We were wheeled up to recovery with more wonderful masked nurses. Recovery was different this time too. It was just Nick, Brooks and I for 3 days. We were discharged Sunday afternoon and I finally left that hospital room for the first time since being wheeled in.
